The program was founded in Racine, Wisconsin by former police officer Julia Burney and provides a reading room and book distribution to children in that community. The program has been honored by Oprah Winfrey and is part of her “Angel Network”. Ms. Burney and the program were also recognized by ABC News in September 2008. Community leaders attending the session were asked to “brainstorm” and provide feedback to the club regarding needs and ideas which may fit within the program’s umbrella. “We are free to design our own program under the Cops ‘n Kids parameters. We are not looking to step on anyone’s toes or reinvent the wheel with Cops ‘n Kids. Our goal is to find ways to supplement and support existing programs or programs which may have never been realized because of funding issues,” explains Julie Leathers, President of Quota International of Orrville. “If we can get our police officers to have a positive contact with children AND give them an opportunity to be exposed to reading at the same time, it’s a win-win for everyone.” The program’s mission is: Working together Cops and kids, as well as other community members with energy to share, can reclaim the future. A future full of reading, writing, successes in school, confidence, self-respect, creativity, potential and the ability to make their own dreams come true.
